The original Regency design by was executed by William Pocock of Covent Garden, London. The patent for this table was registered in 1805 as a “Sympathetic self acting dining-table”. (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds 1996, p.45 and 373). The Regency and later the Victorian period saw a multitude of ingenious mechanical furniture, in line with the mechanization of daily life and the innovations of the Industrial Revolution. This early 19th century table is perfect for small apartment life opening to accommodate up to six people for a comfortable dinner party.
