What are you doing wrong with your living room?
4 mistakes everyone makes when designing their living room
The first space that you enter after a long day, the first place your guest’s see and where you build memoires. Living rooms are just that: the rooms where we live. We spend the majority of our time at home in our living room so why not make this space just the way you want it? The living room of your dreams may be closer than you think. We asked our designers what they believe are the biggest mistakes people make when designing their living space.
#1 Selecting the Wrong Sofa
The sofa is central to how a room looks and feels. Because this is where you spend the majority of your time it is often the largest item in your living room. Choosing the right one for you could make or break your space; a sofa that is too big or too small can dramatically change not only the look but the feel of a room.
Critelli’s Solution: Our professional design consultants will help you find the perfect sofa that suits your style, space and budget.
#2 Selecting a Rug that is too small
A rug is one of the most important aspects of your room, and choosing the correct size for your space is essential. A living room most frequently needs a rug that is either 8” x 10” or a 9” x 12”. Although a 4” x 6” rug may compliment a bedroom, entryway or even a kitchen, it may not be the right fit for a living room. Focus on finding a rug that best suits your space; whether they are used to tie the whole room together or give that neutral space a splash of colour. Rugs are a necessary piece when completing your dream living room.
#3 Poorly planning your layout
It’s important to consider the focal point of the room when considering furniture placement. Whether it be the fireplace, TV or a large window, your furniture should direct your focus to a main part of the room. Placing your furniture around your favourite element will create an effortless flow in your living space.
TIP: Swivel chairs will allow for conversation in an open concept home, connecting your kitchen to your living room.
#4 Making your space too expensive to live in
The days of plastic wrapped furniture are long gone; you want to create a space that you can come home to, feel comfortable in, and de-stress. Why would you design a precious space in your home that is essentially unlivable? You can customize your home exactly how you want it to be and still take into account for pets, children and wear and tear.
Critelli’s Solution: Different fabrics, textures, and materials can change your space; something as simple has choosing a distressed style of wood can create a more causal living area.
TIP: Unique pieces can add personality to a room, removing that show room feel.
Designing your living space doesn’t have to be a challenge when our design consultants are here to offer their expertise. Avoiding these 4 mistakes can go a long way in creating the perfect area.
