Why fret? Because you’re a fan of chinoiserie chic–in 1760 or 2020. Thomas Chippendale illustrated designs for “Chinese Railing” in his furniture style bible, The Gentleman’s and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, first published in 1754. From London to Williamsburg, fashionable houses incorporated porch railings and stair balustrades designed in the Chinese manner. We’ve interpreted a fretwork porch railing from the one of the grandest town houses in Williamsburg—Robert Carter’s house next to the Governor’s Palace—for our Chinoise Fret collection.
